Cirò Marina is an Italian town with 14,269 inhabitants, located in the province of Crotone in Calabria. It lies on the Ionian coast of the Upper Crotonese area. It is known for Cirò DOC wine and as a seaside tourist destination, as well as for its vegetable and fish processing and preservation industries (vegetables in oil, sardella—the so-called 'pink caviar' made from young fish, cured meats, and cheeses).

Excellences of the Territory

Cirò DOC is produced from the Gaglioppo grape variety in three different types: Red, Rosé, and White. It was the first Calabrian wine to receive the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) status in 1969. In recent years, Cirò, particularly in the Red variety, has been regaining its former greatness, thanks to numerous wineries that have managed to innovate without abandoning tradition, both in terms of the grape varieties themselves and the winemaking techniques.

Monuments and Landmarks

The Saracen Markets are a religious benefit from the 18th century. They consist of two rows of stone arches that were once used for merchandise storage. After their renovation, completed in 1990, they have become a setting for artistic and theatrical activities. The Old Tower is located along the slope that connects Madonna of the Sea to the coast. It is a square-plan watchtower, built as a response to the first Saracen invasions.
